Fried Apples

Fried apples are one of my favorite things to make this time of year. They're in season. We're all in the mood for the warm spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. So what better dish to kick off the Autumn season?

We southerners eat Fried Apples with breakfast (great with or in oatmeal!) or as sides with dinner. They're the perfect compliment to pork dishes.

Fried Apples
  • 8 medium apples*, sliced to wedges (keep skins on as the vitamins are just beneath the skin)
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

  1. Melt butter in a heavy skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Add apples, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  3. Sauté 15 minutes until apples are tender.

Most people choose to make them very soft like apples for apple pie. Overcooking kills both vitamins and flavor. If you cook just as instructed above, you'll find that they're not syrupy-sweet but have a delicious blend of the spices, sugar and the natural apple flavor.

*I like using McIntosh apples because of their mingled shades of red and green. It makes for a very presentable dish for guests.

Happy Cooking!
